Quote for November

“No other war (War Between the States) started so many controversies and for no other do they flourish so vigorously.  Every step in the conflict,

every major political decision, every campaign, almost every battle, has its own proud set of controversies, and of all the military figures only Lee stands above argument and debate.  Recent years, however, have seen a new kind of

nastiness emerge in these disputes.  Even the venerable Robert E. Lee has  taken some vicious hits, as dishonest or misinformed advocates among political interest groups and in academia attempt to twist yesterday’s America into a fantasy that might better serve the political issues of today.  The  greatest disservice on this count has been the attempt by these revisionist  politicians

and academics to defame the entire Confederate Army in a move that  can only be termed the Nazification of the Confederacy.  Often cloaked in  the argument over the public display of the Confederate battle flag, the  syllogism goes

something like this: Slavery was evil.  The soldiers of the  Confederacy fought for a system that wished to preserve it.  Therefore they  were evil as well, and any attempt to honor their service is a veiled effort to  glorify the cause of slavery.

This blatant use of the race card in order to inflame their political and academic constituencies is a tired, seemingly endless game that is itself perhaps the greatest legacy of the Civil War’s aftermath.  But in this case  it dishonors hundreds of thousands of men who can defend themselves only through

the voices of their descendants.”

THE FIRST REAL THANKSGIVING, Commentary by David Anderson

The Berkeley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia is the site of the first Thanksgiving. And according to former Presidents, Berkeley is home to the country's first real Thanksgiving.

Everyone has been taught since elementary school that Thanksgiving originated with the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts, you know, that state that’s way above the Mason-Dixon Line.  Well not quite. The circumstances surrounding the holiday have been misinterpreted just enough to misshape the country's perception and history of the first Thanksgiving and its traditions. Indeed, Plymouth was the site of a great three-day feast between the Pilgrims and Indians in 1621. But in the strict sense of the holiday, it was not a thanksgiving, but a harvest festival. Given what we know about the religious convictions of the early settlers, a thanksgiving was a very solemn affair, focused entirely on prayer, not party.

Such a pious day took place along the banks of the James River just east of Richmond on December 4, 1619. After surviving Jamestown during the “starving time,” John Woodlief and his crew, which included a shoemaker, cook, sawyer and gun maker, docked their ship, Margaret and climbed a grassy slope  Where they dropped to their knees and gave thanks. Marking that spot today is a brick gazebo with the following words etched:

“Wee ordaine that the day of our ships' arrival at the place assigned for plantacone in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God.”

Today, we use President George Washington’s proclamation to mark Thanksgiving, “acknowledge with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially for affording them an opportunity to establish a Constitution of Government for their safety.”

“With Your Wings”
Written by Robert Lloyd (Copyright: 2001)

(Verse #1)
Come take my life Lord and take my soul
It’s just about time and I’m feeling kinda low
I think I’ve done all that I could
I begging now if You would Lord
Give me some wings… and I’m ready to go

(Chorus)
I wanna fly to a better place
With Your Wings… I’ll go without a trace
To this world I’m gonna say goodbye
Lord with Your blessing I’ll be able to fly
With Your Wings…   With Your Wings

(Verse #2)
I know it’s my time I can feel it today
It’s not for me to worry Lord… I’m coming Your way
I know I’m at the end of my life
I’ve struggled through both hunger and strife Lord
I tried to be strong… now show me the way

 (Chorus)
I wanna fly to a better place
With Your Wings… I’ll go without a trace
To this world I’m gonna say goodbye
Lord with Your blessing I’ll be able to fly
With Your Wings…   With Your Wings

(Verse #3)
Life’s been tough but I still give thanks
You always took the time Lord to hear my complaints
I feel I’ve done all that I could
Everything I thought I should Lord
If I only had wings… to help me to fly

(Chorus)
I wanna fly to a better place
With Your Wings… I’ll go without a trace
To this world I’m gonna say goodbye
Lord with Your blessing I’ll be able to fly
With Your Wings…   With Your Wings

Black-Eyed Pea Salad

Salad Ingredients

1 can (15 ounces) black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained,

2 large tomatoes, seeded and chopped

1 cup frozen whole kernel corn, thawed

1/2 cup finely chopped bell pepper (you can use green, red, or yellow, or a little of all of them).

1/3 cup vegetable oil

2 tablespoons vinegar

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon dried basil leaves

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
